What’s been playing in the jeep this week #3: David Bowie

Posted in Uncategorized, What's been playing in the jeep this week on February 3, 2010 by theajnabee

This shouldn’t really be a ‘what’s been playing in the jeep this week’ post because the jeep hasn’t actually been going anywhere and there have been no long car journeys to report. However, I can share my house-and-office based listening instead, which this week has mostly been David Bowie. I just found out that I am being shifted to a different sub-station by my employer, so it is farewell to my home north of Patna and South of Mount Everest, so frens, this week in an un-British and slightly awkward moment of sentimentality I give you this week’s featured song, Changes. Lots of movement in the life of the Ajnabee recently.

David Bowie is probably my favourite singer ever, and like me, comes from South East London. I listened to him all weekend while I was cleaning my flat so that it is ready for the next occupant. It certainly made those hours sweeping gecko poo from the surfaces more bearable. My new team mates will definitely be getting a lot of Bowie in the jeep in the coming months.

What’s been playing in the jeep this week #2: Kailash Kher

He’s a short, he’s fat, and he has long greasy hair. But he also has the voice of an angel. Who else could it be but Khailash Kher, undisputed king of Sufi-flavoured pop.

This, dear readers, is the featured song of What’s been playing in the jeep this week…?

We have people from several different cultures working together on our team, and time and time again we find that KK CDs are the only music that we can all agree on, all of the time.

Incase you’re wondering what the video is all about, it’s a reference to Phoolan Devi, the infamous female dacoit-turned-politician (and inspiration of many a racy Hindi/Bhojpuri B-movie). Not a Maoist, I might point out. Quite why she is shown searching for a husband in this video is not clear-I think that the real Phoolan Devi had quite enough problems on the man-front without having to look, having been married first as a girl of 11 to a man 30 years older than herself, and then later to her sister’s husband after her surrender to the police. But hey, it’s a great song.

For the uninitiated, see here and here for more Kailash Kher awesomeness.

What’s been playing in the jeep this week #1: Florence+the Machine

Like many of my kind, this Ajnabee spends a lot of time going around the country in a jeep. This means a lot of time for looking out of the window, playing i-spy and of course, listening to music.

I’ve decided to share with you ‘what’s been playing in the jeep this week’ as a feature of the blog.

This week it is Florence+the Machine’s album ‘Lungs’ which I discovered when I went back to the UK for Christmas. I am, needless to say, woefully behind the times as Florence has been massive in the UK for most of 2009. Here is the amazing ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)’ and its blissfully loopy video, for those of you with fast enough internet connections, to enjoy. This girl is just beautiful and has an astonishing voice.
